5 Things You Need to do to Maintain Your Honda
Your Honda is an investment, and to get the most out of your investment it is important to take steps to protect it. Taking the time to perform regular maintenance will prevent premature wear and tear and result in a safer car that performs better and has a long, healthy life.
Oil Changes
It is extremely important to change your Honda’s oil and filter according to a regular maintenance schedule in order to keep it running like it did the day it left the showroom floor. Very few things can damage your Honda’s engine more quickly than running it with low or degraded oil. The increased friction caused by oil that is used up, or operating it when the oil level is lower than recommended, can cause damage to an engine quickly, requiring expensive repairs. Make checking the oil level a part of your procedure when filling the gas tank.
Transmission
Just as with the oil level, it is important to check the transmission fluid in your Honda on a regular basis as well. If it is low, use a transmission fluid that is called for in your owner’s manual, as not all transmission fluids are compatible. Have the transmission and differentials flushed according to the service interval tables in the owner’s manual as well.
Coolant
Your Honda’s coolant system pumps coolant through the engine, which draws away heat that would otherwise damage it. Use distilled water mixed with the proper antifreeze in order to prevent the buildup of materials that can be found in trace amounts in most tap water. Flush the system according to Honda’s recommendations and replace it with fresh coolant to ensure that your Honda’s engine does not become corroded by contaminated coolant.
Tires
The tires are where your Honda meets the road and it is important to take proper care of them. Check that they are properly inflated before setting out on a trip, and check them periodically throughout the year, as changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure can change the tires pressure, while road debris, such as nails, can lead to gradual loss of pressure. Underinflated or compromised tires lead to reduced braking capability, negatively impacts handling, and reduces fuel efficiency and tire life. Check the tread depth periodically, and look for signs of uneven wear, which could be a sign that your Honda needs an alignment.
Keep It Clean
Take the time to wash the inside, outside, undercarriage, and engine bay of your Honda on a regular basis. Regular cleaning removes damaging containments before they can have a significant impact on your Honda’s appearance. Only use automotive cleaners, because common household cleaners can strip automotive finishes. Wax your Honda about twice a year to protect the painted surfaces. Inspect the vehicle while you detail it, and address anything you find before it grows into a larger problem, such as an untreated scratch which can lead to corrosion.
Preventive maintenance is less pricey than repairs, and will allow you to get the most value from your Honda.
