4 Best Ways to Enjoy Winter in the Burien Area

1. Stevens Pass Washington Ski Resort

If you take I-405 north to U.S. Highway 2 east, you’ll eventually reach the Stevens Pass Washington Ski Resort. Tucked along the western edge of the Cascade Mountains, this ski resort provides a fun-filled week or weekend thanks to 37 runs, a terrain park, and even night skiing. 2. The Polar Bear Plunge

Sometimes, the most adventurous activities don’t necessarily sound like a great idea. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t fun. The annual Polar Bear Plunge at Matthews Beach is just one of those events. On Jan. 1 of each year, several hundred take the leap of faith into the 49-degree water. If you have what it takes, don’t hesitate to sign up early. If you miss it, don’t worry. The group still does several smaller events through the winter and early spring.

To get to Matthews Beach from Burien, head north on Interstate 5 to Washington Highway 522 East.

3. Find a Fire Pit, a Drink, and Some Good Company

When winter temperatures are at their coldest and you’re dreaming of the spring and summer’s warmer temperatures, they aren’t as far away as you might think. The easiest and best remedy is to hit a local bar or restaurant that has a fire pit or heated seating. This includes local hotspots like the Duchess Tavern in Ravenna or the Shelter Lounge in Seattle. Both of these bars are just north of Seattle off Interstate 5.

4. Go For an Alpine Hike

It may seem like a romp in the snowy mountains isn’t the best way to relieve your winter cabin fever, but it’s actually quite exhilarating. It provides picturesque views of the surrounding landscapes and offers some much-needed exercise. While some trails are well-maintained, others require snowshoes and advanced knowledge of winter hiking and safety precautions. The best spots are all east or northeast of Burien and include Snoqualmie Pass, North Cascades National Park, or Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park. Trails range from a mile to several miles and from easy to strenuous.

You could also visit a state park during the winter, which is a particular bargain during the season. All admissions are 100 percent free of charge.
