Honda S2000 Burien, WA

The Honda brand built its name on affordable, safe, and fuel-efficient vehicles. However, few people know that they still craft some of the fastest cars out there. If you’ve never recognized Honda’s performance-based engineering, check out a few of these Hondas which are sure to burn up the road.

S2000

In 1999, Honda unveiled its first roadster. This two-seater, named the S2000, was one of the company’s crowning moments of engineering. With only a 2.0 liter, inline four-cylinder under the hood, the S2000 still packed a punch, going from zero to 60 in just 6.8 seconds. It also managed 240 horsepower and around 153 pound-feet or torque. It’s tough to see why this dual threat got axed in 2009.

Accord V-6 EX-L Coupe

The Accord isn’t exactly what you envision when you think of speed, but then again, you’ve probably never driven the V-6 EX-L Coupe. Sporting a 3.5 liter, V-6 engine, and with considerably less weight than the sedan, the EX-L manages to ramp up to 60 mph from a standstill in just 6.1 seconds.  It’s a quick and versatile car.

Civic Type-R

In recent years, there’s been an uptick in performance based hatchbacks. What you may not know, however, is that Honda was actually at the forefront of this trend. In the early to mid-2000s, the Civic Type-R came out and started blowing the minds of car enthusiasts around the world. Behind a 2.0 liter, four-cylinder engine, the newest incarnation of the Type-R (2015) gets up to 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine then produces a zero-to-60 time of just 5.5 seconds. Although it’s not currently available in the United States, Honda plans to release a version in the near future.

Prelude Si VTEC

Another car that’s long gone, but not forgotten from Honda’s lineup is the Prelude, or more specifically the Prelude Si VTEC. Equipped with a 2.2 liter, four-cylinder VTEC engine, the Prelude soared off the line, boasting a 6.6 second zero-to-60 time, as well as a top speed of up to 148 miles per hour. It was one of Honda’s early performance machines, and when it left the production line in 2001, many fans were rightfully upset.

Honda Del Sol

This two-seater only stayed on the market for six years, but it was a great run for the vehicle. With a VTEC-enhanced 1.6 liter, four-cylinder, the Del Sol went from zero to 60 in just 7.3 seconds, as well as producing up to 39 mpg on the highway. It’s doubtful that you’ll ever see a sporty little car like this from Honda in the near future, but if you find a used one, they’re still a quick and reliable vehicle.

Honda may not seem like a household name for speedy cars, but this list proves otherwise. The only real way to decide for yourself is to drive one. Hopefully, you get that chance soon.
