Honda Odyssey VS the Toyota Sienna

The mini-van market is a segment for consumers to find unmatched cargo capacity, unequalled safety features, and enough modern technology to keep the family safe and entertained while on the road. When shopping for the perfect import mini-van you will likely come down to two main contenders, the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna. So which should you chose? Well we’ll leave that up to you, but let us highlight a few of the differences between the two and then you can decide for yourself.

Let’s start this competition off with my favorite portion, and probably the most overlooked aspect in the mini-van segment, the powertrain.

Honda Odyssey

  • Engine: 3.5L V-6
  • Horsepower: 280
  • Torque: 262 lb-ft
  • Fuel Efficiency: 19-city/28-highway
  • Towing capacity: 3,500 lbs

Toyota Sienna

  • Engine: 3.5L V-6
  • Horsepower: 296
  • Torque: 263 lb-ft
  • Fuel Efficiency: 18-city/24-highway
  • Towing capacity: 3,500 lbs

In this first category both vehicles are relatively similar. Both feature 3.5L V-6 engines that provide enough power to haul your family and all of their cargo on that long family road trip. They are equals in towing capacity which isn’t extraordinarily but offers enough to haul some of those smaller family toys. While the Toyota Sienna does offer slightly more power than the Honda Odyssey, I wouldn’t call this a win for Toyota in this category. The 16 extra horses you will get from the Toyota Sienna doesn’t offer any additional performance enhancement, but does cause the fuel efficiency in the Toyota Siena to suffer.

The clear winner is the Honda Odyssey. It offers an array of safety features that make it one of the safest vehicles on the road. The Toyota offers additional safety features in optional packages such as blind spot monitoring and rear park assist, but the Honda Odyssey offers more options for keeping your family safe.

Honda Odyssey Standard Safety Features

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Road Departure Mitigation

Toyota Sienna Standard Safety Features

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear park assist

Cargo Space

This is one of the major highlights of owning a mini-van. Mini-vans are the best option for accommodating large family and lots of cargo. So this is a key factor in the competition for best mini-van on the market. Both the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna offer a similar cargo capacity. The Toyota technically squeezes out a win in this category but only barely. It only offers less than 1 cu. ft. of additional cargo space over the Honda, so to say it is the clear winner would be a stretch.

Honda Odyssey Cargo Space

  • 4 cu. ft.
  • 5 cu. ft. (with seats down)

Toyota Sienna Cargo Space

  • 1 cu. ft.
  • 150 cu. ft. (with seats down)

Interior Technology

Both the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna have similar interior technology. The key difference is the Honda CabinWatch feature. Only the Honda Odyssey offers the ability to keep an eye on your children from the infotainment system with a passenger camera that is equipped with night vision. Both models offer a feature that allows the driver to speak with passengers through the cabin speakers, and both vehicles offer passenger and driver infotainment systems.

Honda Odyssey

  • CabinWatch
  • CabinTalk
  • Backup camera
  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • Driver info. Interface
  • 2-inch passenger entertainment system

Toyota Sienna

  • Backup camera
  • 7-inch touchscreen
  • 4-inch passenger entertainment system
  • Driver info. Interface
  • Driver Easy Speak

The Honda Odyssey offers more technology for the price which makes it a much better value.
