Burien Soap Box Derby Races
Strawberry Days Soap Box Derby
The inaugural Burien Soap Box Derby Races will be held during the Strawberry Days event on Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 12 PM-4 PM. This all-ages event will take place on SW 152nd St, between 6th St SW and 4th St SW, right in front of Town Square Park in downtown Burien.
Organized by Discover Burien, the event will offer racers ages 8 and up the opportunity to show off their skills to the community. Friends, family, and spectators are encouraged to gather along the course to cheer on their favorite racing team at this fun and family-friendly event. While children under 8 can’t participate in the main event, they are invited to the craft area to construct a small kit car and test it out on a smaller track.
Racers will be part of one of 3 divisions based on age; “Kid Racers” are 8-12 years old, “Teen Racers” are 13-19 years old, and “Adult Racers” are 20 years of age or older. Participants will compete against one other racer from the same division, with the winner advancing to the next race in the bracket. Each racer must be accompanied by at least one crew member, who will be allowed to give the vehicle a starting push at the beginning of the race. Teams can have up to five members total.
Event organizers want the Burien Soap Box Derby Races to be a fun and safe event, so riders must come prepared with safety gear and do their best to build a sturdy vehicle. That being said, teams are encouraged to be as creative as possible with their vehicle designs. “Many racers will come up with a theme for their cart and pit crew,” explains Discover Burien, “while others just might want a cart built for distance.” Vehicles must be hand-made; teams with kit and prefabricated vehicles will be disqualified. All vehicles will be subject to safety and weight inspections by race officials before the event begins.
The annual Strawberry Days event and Relay for Life Cornhole Tournament will also be happening just off the race course at Town Square Park. The family-friendly Strawberry Days will host activities, music, dancing, games, and special events that are sure to entertain everyone. There will also be several local craft vendors showcasing their goods, such as handmade jewelry, bags, clothing, and more. Burien Arts Association will serve the delicious strawberry shortcake after which the event is named. Visitors will even find booths with information, giveaways, and activities from local businesses and organizations — a great way to see what’s happening in the local Burien community.
Applications for Derby Race participants will be accepted until Wednesday, June 13, 2018, or until the event is full. Racers must arrive for check-in and vehicle inspection between 8:30 AM and 11 AM on race day. The concurrent Strawberry Days event will take place at Town Square Park on the weekend of June 16-17, 2018 from 10 AM-4 PM. More details, race rules, and application documents can be found here.
