Honda Civic Type R is coming to America

It seems every day we have plenty to be excited about in the auto industry, but there’s just as much that disappoints us. For nearly 20 years we’ve been disappointed with the Honda Civic Type R being made available to the European market while it’s denied to us here. It first came out in 1997 and sits above the Honda Civic Si as the sportiest model available. Finally Honda has announced that we won’t have to be disappointed any longer, which naturally has fans stirring about the Honda Civic Type R U.S. release date and pricing.

Will the U.S. Honda Civic Type R be a 2017 or 2018 model year?

We say nearly 20 years, but with the announcement of a U.S. release has not come a confirmed date. Speculation has us guessing it won’t be coming too soon either, with a Honda’s executive VP John Mendel saying it could be as long as 2018 before we see the sporty hatchback in showrooms. This, unfortunately, lines up with what we know about Honda redesigns which seem to roll out on a four-year basis. The new 2016 Honda Civic represents a refresh on the standard model, bringing it into its 10^th generation. The Type R is now in its 4^th generation as of this year, and though it has been confirmed we won’t quite be waiting for the next generation, it only makes sense for Honda to focus on the redesigned standard model while slowly rolling out other options.

Features of the Honda Civic Type R

We’ve already stated this model has proven itself as the sportiest option in the Civic lineup, which is why it has been getting so much attention. Obviously we can’t know much about a model that may not be coming out for a few years, but if we are to assume it will be anything like the 2015 Honda Civic Type R currently available in Europe, it will be fitted with the 2.0-liter turbo four, which returns 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Comparing this to the Si, which only delivers 205 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, it’s obvious why the buzz is growing into a dull roar. The Type R also is said to have a 0 to 62 mph time of 5.7 seconds and can drive up to 168 miles per hour. Acceleration for the Si is just about a full second slower and the top speed is only 125 mph.
