Honda Dominates IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards
Honda has long been known to have some of the safest, most dependable vehicles on the market. Honda has also been the predominant leader over the years in receiving safety and performance awards. This year alone, an astounding seven Honda models earned the TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards, including the 2023 Accord, 2023 Civic Hatchback, 2023 Civic Sedan, 2023 CR-V, 2023 HR-V, 2023 Odyssey, and the 2023 Honda Pilot.
The all-new Honda Accord earned the top spot with an overall GOOD rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) during its Front Moderate Overlap Test, superseding five midsize sedan competitors. The 2023 Accord is also the only model to earn GOOD ratings in all rear passenger injury measures. This Honda model is powered by a 1.5-liter Turbocharged Direct-Injected VTEC 4-cylinder that produces 192 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque, and its base model is available starting at $27,295 MSRP.
This newly implemented test by the IIHS focuses on improving rear-seat protection by seating an adult-sized dummy in the driver’s seat and a child-sized dummy behind the driver. These metrics measure the injuries most frequently seen in backseat passengers. For a vehicle to earn a GOOD rating, there can’t be an excessive risk of injury to the head, neck, chest, or thigh. The dummy must remain correctly positioned, and a pressure sensor is used to check the shoulder belt position during the test crash. The 2023 Accord provided remarkable rear seat protection. The measurements taken did not show any increased risks of injury, and the child-sized dummy’s motions remained controlled during the crash.
The Honda Commitment to Safety
The 2023 Accord features Honda Sensing, highlighting top safety through its Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Traffic Sign Recognition System (TSR), Traffic Jam Assist, and Auto High-Beam Headlights. These features come standard on all trim levels. Blind Spot Information System (BSI), Cross Traffic Monitor (CTM), Low-Speed Braking Control, and Parking Sensors (4 Front & 4 Rear) upgrades are available on higher trim levels.
Honda’s safety initiative improves safety for everyone on the road through its “Safety for Everyone” business, which operates two of the world’s best crash-test facilities in Ohio and Japan. It’s responsible for several improvements in areas of crashworthiness, collision compatibility, and pedestrian safety, including next-generation passenger front airbag technology.
