2023 Honda Accord Earns Highest Recognition From IIHS

How Safe is the 2023 Honda Accord?

In the last 10-15 years, an idea has emerged that a vehicle can’t be safe unless it’s a large SUV. This isn’t necessarily the case. Certainly, due to their size and higher ride height, an SUV can have certain advantages in some crash scenarios, but it doesn’t make them safe by default.

Likewise, just because a vehicle is a sedan doesn’t mean that it isn’t safe. Instead of making assumptions about vehicle safety, we must test each vehicle on its own to determine how it might hold up in certain crash situations and to consider the kind of safety equipment it includes.

2023 Accord’s IIHS Rating and Safety Features

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does exactly that. For each new model, the IIHS runs a series of crash tests that help to determine how a vehicle can handle certain collisions. 

These crash tests include frontal and side collisions, and even a test for the roof strength. The best rating a vehicle can get on any single crash test is Good. In assessing advanced safety tech that a vehicle might come with, Superior is the top rating awarded to any vehicle.

So, what about the Accord? Well, the IIHS put the Accord through its paces, like any other vehicle, and the Accord passed the assessment with flying colors. The IIHS gave the 2023 Honda Accord the Top Safety Pick+ recognition, which is the highest award given by the organization. 

When looking further at some of the details, the Accord excelled in its crash tests by earning a Good rating in all crashworthiness assessments. In addition, the Accord earned a Superior rating for its daytime vehicle to pedestrian front crash prevention system.

Though the assessment by the IIHS doesn’t cover every single piece of safety tech included on the 2023 Honda Accord, there are some others we want to make note of. These include the Forward Collision Warning, Road Departure Mitigation system, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist system and Adaptive Cruise Control. The Accord, like all other new Honda vehicles, also has Honda’s proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure, designed to provide improved protection in frontal crashes and accompanied by pretensioning seatbelts and airbags for the front, side, knees and side-curtain of passenger seating areas.
