New EV Network Charges Up North America

Charging your electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid is about to get a lot easier! From Burien to the rest of North America, plans are underway for a new network of EV charging stations that are convenient, affordable, and sustainable. Seven automakers have come together to create this new network that will start production sometime this year with plans for stations to become available sometime in 2024.

Taking Charge of the Future

A joint venture among major vehicle producers – BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz Group, and Stellantis – is in the works to add 30,000 charging stations to North America’s existing network. The network will offer two charging options available to all customers. EV drivers that use the Combined Charging System or North American Charging Standard connectors can use the new stations, making EV charging and ownership more accessible across the continent. As more drivers adopt plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles, the network is coming at the right time to boost EV sales and increase EV adoption across North America.

Charging stations will be strategically placed in both cities and highway locations, expanding the network and allowing drivers the option to travel farther. The collaboration hopes to make EV charging easier by choosing locations near restrooms, shopping, food, and entertainment, allowing travelers to multitask as they wait for their vehicle to charge. Drivers can plan their road trip or errand run through in-vehicle navigation and smartphone apps by searching for stations along their route and making a reservation.

The collaboration will make charging even more sustainable by utilizing renewable energy sources for each charging station. Whether drivers are running around town or traveling across the country, they can access multiple DC fast chargers for high-powered charging without a negative environmental impact.

Honda alone has plans to add 10 electric vehicles to its lineup by 2027 with 100% of its sales to be electrified by 2040. Later this year, Honda hopes to begin producing its own lithium-ion batteries in conjunction with LG Energy Solutions, adding to the current lineup of hybrids like the CR-V Hybrid and Accord Hybrid.
