Will there be a Honda CR-V Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicle?

As the automotive industry collectively turns more and more toward electrification, some brands are beginning to explore hydrogen fuel cell technology further. Honda is no stranger to the technology, having produced their fair share of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in the past, such as the Honda Clarity. According to executives, they’ll be returning to the hydrogen well in the 2024 calendar year as the automaker launches a new FCEV based on the redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V.

What do we know so far?

The main thing that we know is that Honda is working on a new generation of hydrogen fuel cell technology. The new system that will underpin this forthcoming CR-V-based FCEV was developed by the partnership between Honda and General Motors. While most details are still cloudy at best, we do know that the technology costs a third of what the company’s previous iteration – found in the 2019 Clarity Fuel Cell – did, despite being twice as durable.

One of the biggest concerns facing hydrogen fuel cell technology is the lack of infrastructure. While gas stations are widespread throughout the country and electricity is pretty readily available, especially now, hydrogen refueling stations are still extremely limited. Until the infrastructure is expanded, this is a big problem for the tech. Honda might have found a way to reduce these concerns for consumers, though, as the automaker has stated that the new CR-V-based model will also provide some degree of plug-in electric capability, allowing an alternative means of power.

Another thing we know for sure is that the company’s Performance Manufacturing Center facility based out of Ohio will be building the model alongside its current suite of models in production, which includes the Acura NSX.

What’s next for Honda FCEVs?

We’ll be sure to clue you into additional details regarding this new FCEV based on the sixth-generation Honda CR-V, but what else does the company have on the horizon where this technology is concerned? The company has stated that it expects to have a FCEV in production by 2030 that further reduces costs and improves durability. In fact, they’ve come out and stated they intend the model to be half the cost of the new system developed alongside General Motors, and twice as durable. According to Honda, this future system could be roughly the same cost as a diesel engine.
